Japji, Ardas and Hukum

This year Jai Inder Kaur will offer 1 hour interactive workshops for those wishing to learn how to recite the Ardas and receive a Hukamana from the Siri Guru Granth Sahib.

Shiv Charan Singh, renowned Kundalini Yoga teacher, offers these words to reveal how the Japji, Ardas and Hukam are powerful and beautiful ways to express commitment to the journey of the soul, and enable a state of being where our higher selves are reflected back to us and into our daily lives.

Japji is Ja Pa Ji. Ja is go. Pa is realise, or obtain. Ji is soul. Oh my soul proceed and realise (your true nature as one with God).

So Japji is a process of calling on your soul. Bringing your soul present, embodied into this incarnation and into this new day.

Now the soul, Ji, is ready to go through the rest of the sadhana as a journey through 3 stages which are represented in many ways. Like the 3  gunas of Maya; tama, raja, sattva. Or the 3 truths and 3 psyches; personal, contextual/circumstantial and universal.

1st stage is for the individual animal; where Kundalini sleeps and awaits awakening.

2nd stage is for the communal human; where the We-in-me hides and awaits discovery.

3rd stage is for the universal angel; where the purified mind becomes enlightened and transparent.

1st Kriya – works on the body; the animal, and is totally individual and personal. Each one has different physical capacity and does their best.

2nd Mantra meditation – here we sit close together blending our voices and auras. We experience how the shared space of chanting together multiplies the effects of the practice by at least 10 times. It is like a flock of birds working together and crossing the ocean of time and space.

3rd prayer and reading of sacred text.

The 3rd stage is often considered irrelevant or unnecessary. When in fact we have spent the 2 hours and more to be in the perfect clarity of consciousness to have revelation descend from our higher consciousness, the subtle body.

Whether we would take an oracle (angel, taro) card, read a random page from any sacred text, throw coins for the I-Ching, throw shells on the floor, or read the tea-leaves in our cup.

The fact is, at this final stage of sadhana, we are in the purest and most receptive mode for a greater wisdom to be revealed to us. Sadhana cannot be considered complete without linking in to something that will reflect back to us the highest wisdom that we can hear and carry throughout our day.

In the formal settings of KY Sadhana ‘as taught by YB’ this would normally be expected to take the form of a prayer (Ardas) and a reading from the Siri Guru Granth Sahib.

In the private setting of your own home you may experiment to find ways this would work for you.

All blessings
